Conference: Approach to the speaking voice, a working tool in the academic environment: parameters to take into account for a balanced vocal placement

Description: The voice, like writing, is one of the main working tools for both students and teachers. In seminars, lectures, and teaching activities, the correct use of the speaking voice has remarkable advantages for both the receiver and the emitter: it improves the transmission of the message, thus allowing a pedagogical practice and a transmission that is as enriching as it is pleasant. For speakers, on the other hand, taking care of one's voice is also a matter of health and well-being.
Proposed by Francine Kostmann (Speech Language Therapist and trainer, specialized in vocal rehabilitation), this conference aims to provide the main keys to understand the physiology of the phonatory system, and from this knowledge, to establish the essential criteria of a balanced vocal gesture, to improve the use of this one in the activities which concern the academic environment.
This conference will be followed by a discussion based on the questions that can be asked in relation to the spoken voice.

Conference: An Examination of Bookshelves in the Age of the COVID-19 Pandemic as a Liminal Space.
Speaker: Dr. Shafquat Toweheed, senior lecturer in English at The Open University, Milton Keynes, United-Kingdom.

Description: For over two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we work, study, live, and communicate with one another. Prolonged periods of national lockdowns caused the conflation of public and private workspace. We attended endless online meetings from home where our bookshelves were suddenly on public display, where once a few people could look at the books on our shelves. Much more than a Zoom background, the bookshelves displayed our cultural capital to the whole world. And because we are — literally — what we read, physical bookshelves broadcast on screen have become sites of self-promotion, contestation, erasure, self-censorship, moral judgement, mythmaking and trolling. If Amanda Hess has considered that the credibility bookcase was the "quarantine’s hottest accessory" (New York Times, 1 May 2020), John Quiggin has pointed out that this newly respectable flaunting of cultural capital could entrench existing socio-economic inequalities.
Drawing upon theoretical perspectives from anthropology, psychology and literary theory, Dr. Shafquat Towheed, senior lecturer at The Open University (Milton Keynes, UK) and specialist in book history, will critically examine the cultural phenomenon of the pandemic bookshelf.

Conference: Is morality a big mistake?
Speakers: Dr. François Jaquet, Assistant Professor in Ethics, University of Strasbourg ; Dr. Hichem Naar, Assistant Professor in Philosophy, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany

Description: What is the nature of moral facts? Do such facts exist? Can moral statements claim truth? Perhaps you think the death penalty is unjust? Or that abortion is morally acceptable? Could it be that you are wrong?
In this conference, error theorists François Jaquet and Hichem Naar will address these questions and present their latest publication, Qui peut sauver la morale ? Essai de métaéthique [Who can save morality? Essay on metaethics] (Les Éditions d’Ithaque, 2019). The first manual on metaethics to appear in French, the work focuses specifically on moral error theory, by which all moral judgments are false. By offering both psychological and ontological arguments and explanations of moral error theory, Jaquet and Naar will explain how our presuppositions about morality are necessarily false.
